Samsung J7 2016 Review

Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016 edition) is the new generation of affordable Samsung phablet: has a stylish case, a sturdy metal or aluminum frame I should say, a Quick Launch camera shortcut, and a different “plastic” look and feel of old Samsung phones. Did I mention it has a larger battery compared to its predecessors?

With its 5.5” screen, not different from other smart-phones of today, it carries its brand name and elegance of that of any new Samsung version phones less the pricey mark-up, for practical reasons. That 5.5" screen by the way is AMOLED.

So let’s get into an in-depth review of the J7.

In terms of size and weight, the J7 6 is well balanced for a 5.5” phone: At 2.99 inches (76mm) width and thickness comes in at the rather thin 7.8mm. The phone tips the scales at 169g (~6 oz), which is neither too heavy, nor too light for a phone this size. Slightly slimmer than its predecessor – Samsung Galaxy J7

The chassis of the Galaxy J7 (2016) is made of an aluminum frame and plastic back, it feels significantly more premium than the completely plastic Galaxy J7. The metal frame also makes the case very solid and practically immune to bending and twisting of any sort. The metal frame does not have a negative impact on the weight with only one gram more than the Galaxy J7. The removable back cover conceals the replaceable 3330 mAh battery, as well as a Micro SIM and a microSD card slot.

The buttons are made from metal, but the “clicky” sound when pressed is something I’m not a fan of. The home-key in front is no different from its predecessors- just a regular home button. Security locks though, don’t come with finger-print lock, too bad. That would have been a nice feature. The lock key is found on the right and volume (separate buttons) on the left, while the microUSB charging port is found at the bottom.

Overall, Samsung has gone easy on the upgrade and by not completely reinventing the Galaxy J7, except for the internals. Instead of the octa-core Snapdragon 615 SoC with structures of 28 nm, the 2016 Galaxy J7 uses Samsung's own and more powerful Exynos 7870 Octa (structures of 14 nm) and comes with 2 GB of RAM. The battery has also got a small upgrade, with the capacity rising to 3300 mAh. The control center is no longer Android 5.1, but Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

Aside from the black unit, Samsung also offers the Galaxy J7 (2016) in gold and white.
